La pouss\u00e9e rationaliste qui s\u2019exerce lors des r\u00e9volutions de 1642 et de 1688 d\u00e9clenche les grands mouvements id\u00e9ologiques et les mutations philosophiques et scientifiques qui se d\u00e9veloppent au XVIIIe si\u00e8cle, mais provoque en retour une lente \u00e9rosion des dogmes religieux \u00ab [\u2026] au profit d\u2019id\u00e9es s\u00e9culaires et h\u00e9t\u00e9rodoxes \u00bb. La franc-ma\u00e7onnerie anglaise \u00ab moderne \u00bb appara\u00eet dans ce contexte de lib\u00e9ration de la pens\u00e9e, entre l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re studieuse des soci\u00e9t\u00e9s savantes (Royal Society) et le bouillonnement intellectuel h\u00e9t\u00e9roclite des coffee-houses londoniennes o\u00f9 se cr\u00e9e la premi\u00e8re Grande Loge de Londres. En ce sens, on peut dire que la franc-ma\u00e7onnerie moderne est bien davantage le produit du si\u00e8cle anglais des Lumi\u00e8res que celui des anciennes corporations de ma\u00e7ons op\u00e9ratifs. Par franc-ma\u00e7onnerie moderne, on entend celle qui, \u00e0 partir d\u2019une forme pr\u00e9existante en \u00c9cosse et Angleterre, se constitue sous une forme radicalement nouvelle plus qu\u2019elle ne se cr\u00e9e, \u00e0 Londres, en 1717 selon l\u2019historiographie classique, mais plus probablement vers 1721-23 selon certaines avanc\u00e9es convaincantes de la recherche r\u00e9cente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On ne soutiendra pas dans ce travail que les francs-ma\u00e7ons anglais du d\u00e9but du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle sont tous des satellites de la galaxie h\u00e9t\u00e9rodoxe \u2013 latitudinaires, d\u00e9istes, antitrinitaires ou ath\u00e9es \u2013 mais \u00e0 la lecture de certains articles des obligations du ma\u00e7on inscrites dans les Constitutions d\u2019Anderson (1723), qui soutiennent la pluralit\u00e9 des opinions religieuses, on n\u2019est pas loin d\u2019un libertinisme philosophique et \u00e9rudit qui se d\u00e9veloppe rapidement en Angleterre et dont les deux points d\u2019ancrage critiques sont \u00ab la morale et les dogmes chr\u00e9tiens \u00bb. Le franc-ma\u00e7on libertin, loin d\u2019\u00eatre interdit de loge, entend penser et agir par lui-m\u00eame.
